Kombucha has been consumed for many centuries, partly because of the health-promoting effects traditionally associated with the drink. In its raw, unpasteurized form, kombucha contains a live culture of bacteria and yeast that is said to have a positive effect on the microbiome and intestinal health. Other potential benefits come from fermentation by-products such as B vitamins and antioxidants.
Lab and animal studies have shown promising results, but there is still no conclusive scientific evidence that these effects also apply to humans.

Why do people consider kombucha healthy?
Kombucha is often associated with health benefits. Laboratory and animal research suggests possible positive effects on digestion, immunity, and even disease prevention. However, current scientific studies are not yet sufficient to confirm these effects in humans.
At YAYA Kombucha, we have always valued transparency about these findings. In our early years, we brewed raw kombucha containing live cultures, and we even conducted tests showing that the bacteria could reach the intestines intact, with a higher survival rate than raw yoghurt.
Since 2024, however, we have switched to pasteurizing our kombucha. This means the drink no longer contains live bacteria or yeast cultures. Pasteurization helps ensure consistent quality, stability, and safety, while still delivering the familiar YAYA Kombucha taste made from organic teas and low sugar.
Claimed health benefits of kombucha
Some people say that unpasteurized kombucha has the following health benefits:
- Gut health: It has been scientifically proven that the bacteria culture in YAYA Kombucha reaches the intestines intact with a survival rate much higher than raw yoghurt. The bacteria in kombucha may be beneficial for a healthy gut although it is not proven. Read more about our scientific findings here.
- The immune system: vitamins A, B and K are created during the process of fermentation.
- Antioxidants: it is made using green and/ or black teas which both rich in antioxidants that are essential to a healthy functioning body.
Final thoughts
As outlined above, there are many claims surrounding kombucha which may be true but have yet to be proven using scientific research. What we do know is that most kombucha, especially YAYA Kombucha is made using organic ingredients, is free of chemicals and is low in sugar which makes for a better alternative to most sugary sodas or alcoholic beverages.
